New Year’s Thoughts

So, I found this thing about New Year‘s and it’s not really about goals/resolutions so much as making 2012 the best year yet. I can like that. So, here goes:

Prompts — all answers will be in past tense to suggest that I have already done them, the thought behind that being that if you think about goals in a way that they are things you have already accomplished, you’re more likely to do so. Anyway, here goes.

1. Because I wanted to make 2012 count, I… got my fitness certifications (btw, BIG NEWS: I’m teaching my very own class at the YMCA starting Monday!)

2. Because fear of failure was no longer a good enough reason to not do it, in 2012 I… wrote a short story

3. Because I listened to the whispers inside, in 2012 I… stopped worrying about my weight

4. Because the things that brought me joy in childhood still do, in 2012 I… read a new book every month (I read a lot as a child; I have a 2 year old — we play a lot, so I share my childhood joys with her every day)

5. Because simple pleasures are so rich, in 2012 I… cooked one new recipe a month

6. Because my body has served me so beautifully all these years, in 2012 I… ran 2 Half Marathons!

7. Because the world needs my service, in 2012 I… volunteered to help needy families. I taught a class this past semester on stewardship and ethical responsibility and the students opted to do community service as a final project — it was inspiring and I plan to do the same and hopefully include my husband and daughter.

8. Because of the remarkable people who have loved me and made me who I am, in 2012 I… threw an awesome 50th birthday party for my husband, ran a race with my dad (and didn’t trip him) and took a trip with my husband & daughter.

9. Because I am willing to believe in the power of forgiveness, in 2012 I… went back to church

10. Because the silence had gone on long enough, in 2012 I…. am not sure about this one. I gave my daughter a drum for Christmas. Does that count?

11. Because I am so blessed, in 2012 I… am not sure about this one either. I am quite blessed but IĀ  don’t know what to say about it. I am thankful and astonished everyday that I have a mostly super awesome husband and a beautiful daughter whose curiosity and enthusiasm delight me every day. I remembered this thought every time my husband had to work late, my daughter colored her skin (again) and I lost my keys. I am blessed.

12. Because I wanted, in the last days of my life, to remember this year with tears of gratitude, in 2012 I… spent as much time as possible with my family

So I just noticed it’s been over a month since I posted anything. Oops. That’s not because nothing is going on — quite the opposite, in fact!

Big News: I’m going to be instructing my VERY OWN fitness class at our local YMCA starting in January! A bootcamp class, even! Who would have EVER thought that?!

So to back up a little bit, my mom, dad & I ran (well, mom walked) a 5 mile race in Nashville on Thanksgiving. It was awesome except I overdressed and my dad fell — we still finished under 50 min (we didn’t have time chips, so just a guess – official time was 53 something but we were slowed by walkers for literally the first mile; this race has over 7,000 participants!).

So, seriously, am I shrinking? My parents are not that tall?!

What else? My running has taken a total backseat to other fitness things – bootcamp, cycling, pilates, not cleaning the house, oh and grades. There was a week I thought I was getting sick (both hubby and daughter had it!) so I took it easy, gained 100 million lbs and tomorrow I’m subbing pilates! Woot!

Tomorrow is also my birthday. Yippee?
